Óscar Ruiz, is a central character in Cable Girls. He is a transgender man portrayed by Ana María Polvorosa. Throughout the series, he discovers his identity and begins a relationship with coworker Carlota Senillosa. He later works as a journalist reporting on the Spanish Civil War.

Early Life[]

Although it began as a one time thing, in Chapter 12: Guilt, Óscar reveals to Carlota that, as a child, he would often borrow his brother's clothes and go out on the streets dressed as a boy. His father, embarrassed by the attention this was drawing from their neighbors, threatened him to make him stop. However, Óscar ignored him and, instead, stood up to him one day and tried to explain his gender identity to him. In response, he gave him a terrible beating.

Series[]

At the start of the series Oscar was a supervisor at the telephone company. He is a part of a women’s rights organization which allows him to form a relationship with Carlota.

At the end of the series, Óscar, along with the other girls, have to face a group of Nationalist soldiers. The soldiers shoot at them as they run out to distract the soldiers in order to protect their lives one. The screen cuts to black, implying that they died.

Personality[]

Óscar is a strong no-nonsense man who expects the same of the telephone operators. When the girls show up late on their first day, he was more than happy to let them miss their test. However, he has a caring side as well, who is willing to do anything to fight for his friends. He saves Carlota from arrest and supports Angeles in her own personal troubles.

Carlota Senillosa[]

Oscar first meets Carlota in episode 1 at the telephone operators trials as Oscar is the supervisor and is running the trials.

When he comes out as trans to Carlota, she fully supports him.

He frames himself for a murder in order to prevent Carlota from going to prison. Carlota works with the other cable girls to break Oscar out of prison. At the end of season four, Oscar and Carlota move to France together and begin to work as journalists.
